Fraternity FAQ
What are fraternities
and sororities?
Fraternities and sororities are groups of invidiuals who have formed come together under the Greek system for social and academic support. Through common experiences centered around the pursuit of higher education, service to the community, development of leadership skills, and friendship, members of fraternities and sororities build relationships that last far beyond the college years.
Why Delta Tau Delta?
Simply, Delta Tau Delta is a values-based fraternity. Our fraternity was founded trying to promote justice, and we carry those ideals with us today. We are dedicated to devloping men of quality and character, forming lasting friendships, while having lots of fun in the process.
I want to succeed academically. Will fraternity or sorority membership help or hinder my efforts?
Scholarship should be a top priority at the University of Florida. Greek members at UF exceed the overall student body GPA. As well, Delta Tau Delta ranks in the top third of fraternities on campus acadically. Ultimately, you are responsible for your own academic success. However, our academic advisor is here to help you with study sessions for the pledges and a test/notes bank for you to prepare with. As well, you will likely find several brothers who have the same major or classes as you.
I have heard that fraternities and sororities emphasize leadership. What opportunities will I have in the organization?
In fraternities and sororities, you're in charge. Every member will get a chance to lead in the fraternity through committee or executive board membership through areas ranging from the finance committee to planning socials. Greek membership at UF also provides valuable connections for involvment in student government. Delts have had numerous student senators and the Student Senate president in recent years.
Does it cost a lot to be in a fraternity?
Membership in Delta Tau Delta is not expensive, especially considering the benefits of membership. Chapter activities and house upkeep are supported from membership dues. Included in membership dues is the meal plan - both lunch and dinner are provided by the fraternity's chef (and the food is MUCH better than that available on campus) 5 days a week. As well, a room in the house is much cheaper than apartment rates in the area.
How much time will be expected of me?
This depends upon your willingness to get involved and make a difference. Like any organization, the fraternity or sorority will have general expectations of you. Most importantly, you will be expected to attend meetings and events. Through your fraternity or sorority involvement, you'll learn to manage your time and balance your academic load, work, and social commitments.
What happens once I join?
After accepting your bid, you become a Delta Tau Delta pledge. During the pledging process, you will learn about fraternity history, develop friendships with your pledge brothers and the brotherhood, and learn valuable skills such as time management and financial planning that will help you not only in your pledgeship, but in life.
What about housing?
Delta Tau Delta offers housing to all initiated brothers. The Delt house has 26 rooms, which you will get to see during Rush. While living in the Delt house in not required of brothers, it is strongly suggested. As previously mentioned, housing rates are very competitve with rent in the area.
I'm new to the University of Florida, wouldn't it be better for me to get my feet on the ground before I join a fraternity or sorority?
Not necessarily. A large place like UF can be intimidating, confusing, and impersonal. Joining a fraternity in your first semester can actually help acclimate you to the University, as well as provide you with a support group from day one. As well, we have mandatory study sessions for all pledges to ensure you will not fall behind in school.
What about
housing?
Some fraternities and
sororities offer housing
and others do not. Some
members live in the
chapter house, others do
not. It's important to
remember that a
fraternity or sorority
is a group of men or
women who join together
in pursuit of common
goals and aspirations.
Fraternities and
sororities are not about
houses, structures, or
real estate. People are
the most important
consideration when
joining a new group.
I've heard
something about hazing.
What's that all about?
Delta Tau Delta has a no hazing policy. While we have expectations of involvement during the pledging process, you will not be harmed in any way. If you do believe there has been a hazing incident, you can discuss it with the University or our chapter advisor.
